The Oxford Review of Latin American Studies (ORLAS)

Founded in 2025 by graduate students at the University of Oxford, the Oxford Review of Latin American Studies (ORLAS) is a student-run academic journal dedicated to the study of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was created to both bring Oxford’s scholarly community into global discussions on Latin America, and create a new platform for innovative perspectives on the region’s complex politics, history, economics, culture, and international relations. With an interdisciplinary and international composition of contributions, the journal seeks to make a meaningful contribution on the debates and discussions that deepen the world’s understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Peer-Reviewed Journal

The Peer-Reviewed Journal is the flagship publication of ORLAS. This section features original research articles that undergo a rigorous double-blind review process conducted by members of the editorial board and external reviewers where appropriate. We welcome interdisciplinary scholarship spanning politics, history, economics, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and international relations. By maintaining high academic standards and a structured review process, the journal seeks to provide a platform for emerging scholars while contributing meaningfully to ongoing debates in Latin American and Caribbean studies.

Online Edition

The Online Edition publishes timely commentary, policy analysis, book reviews, and shorter essays that engage with current events and contemporary debates across Latin America and the Caribbean. Unlike the peer-reviewed section, submissions to the Online Edition undergo editorial review rather than formal external peer review, allowing for a more rapid publication timeline. This format enables contributors to respond to unfolding political developments, economic trends, social movements, and cultural shifts in the region. The Online Edition serves as a dynamic forum for accessible, high-quality analysis aimed at both academic and policy-oriented audiences.

Podcast

The Podcast extends the journal’s mission beyond the written page by featuring conversations with scholars, policymakers, journalists, and practitioners working on Latin America and the Caribbean. Through interviews and thematic discussions, the podcast highlights new research, explores pressing regional issues, and provides insight into the lived experiences behind academic debates. It is designed to make complex topics accessible to a broader audience while maintaining intellectual rigor. By integrating audio content with our written publications, the podcast strengthens the journal’s commitment to dialogue and interdisciplinary exchange.
